Unidirectional Flushing

The Department of Public Utilities is in the process of performing a unidirectional flushing program in the City of Chippewa Falls. Unidirectional flushing uses a high velocity of water to clean water mains by systematically opening and closing valves and flushing hydrants.  As valves and hydrants are operated, there could be a slight drop in water pressure and discolored water.

Flushing was completed on the West Hill area on July 29, 2011. Flushing was moved to the South Hill the first week of August 1, 2011.  Scheduling of Unidirectional Flushing may be adjusted due to construction and manpower needs.

If you would like to know approximately when your neighborhood could be affected, please click HERE to view the South Hill schedule or contact our office at 726-2741.

Between two to ten sequences can be flushed per day depending on length of the flush and utility personnel available.

If you notice discolored water, the Water Department suggests that you turn on the cold water and let it run until the water becomes colorless. As this is a large scale operation covering all of Chippewa Falls, your water could be discolored on several different occasions. It is preferable to do your laundry and wash the dishes between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. during the week or any time on the weekends, since no work will be performed on the hydrants during these periods.
